Low-hanging fruit to improving your health

People often ask me what the single best thing they can do to get healthier.

Well, here it is, in a nutshell: avoid toxins. When our bodies accumulate toxins (which we are bombarded by constantly with chemicals in fragrances, cleaning supplies, cosmetics, food, etc), these toxins are stored in our fat and it becomes harder to lose weight and get healthy. You might think that tacky tree air freshener hanging from your rearview mirror or those Febreze car vent clips eliminates odor, but they do more to pollute the air than any natural foul smell. I’d take wet-dog smell over carcinogenic air fresheners any day. The last thing air “fresheners” do is purify or freshen the air you breathe. Your poor body has to work even harder to detoxify the chemicals you are ingesting. Do your lungs, your liver, your lymphatic system, and your cells a favor and ditch these altogether. Same goes with scented laundry detergent and dryer sheets. These, along with perfumes, are now becoming classified as the new “second-hand smoke”. When you douse your sheets and clothes in these chemicals, your skin - which is a really effective organ that absorbs nutrients as well as harmful compounds becomes a large transdermal patch, soaking up these endocrine-disrupting poisons that interfere with your ability to sleep well at night. Show love for yourself, your family and your pets by opting for the unscented detergents, and replace dryer sheets with reusable dryer balls. Another way you can clean up your health is to use pure beeswax candles rather than scented candles. Do you suffer from headaches or migraines? Your scented candles could be why (along with the perfume or fragranced lotion you wear - remember: transdermal patch!). Pure beeswax actually pulls toxins from the air, and has a lovely, natural scent. A simple question to ask yourself is: does this product contain a man-made fragrance? If so, ditch it, and see how much better you feel after a few weeks. Even if you don’t necessarily feel different, you can rest assured you are doing yourself and your loved ones a great service.
